5 cool tips & tricks for Adobe Illustrator

This might seem like a weird post coming from a brand that sells tees and clothing, but we are as much a design brand as a fashion brand and we use Illustrator all the time; So we thought here's some stuff we've learned as designers over the years!

Adobe Illustrator is a powerful tool for creating vector graphics, but even experienced users can discover new tricks to enhance their workflow. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned designer, these tips and tricks will help you make the most out of Illustrator.

1. Use the Shape Builder Tool Efficiently

The Shape Builder Tool is a game-changer for creating complex shapes easily. Instead of using the Pathfinder panel, you can draw basic shapes, select them, and use the Shape Builder Tool to combine or subtract parts. To do this, drag over the areas you want to combine, or hold down the Alt/Option key and drag over the areas you want to remove. This tool is perfect for creating intricate designs quickly.

2. Master the Pen Tool

The Pen Tool is essential for creating precise paths and curves. To get better at using the Pen Tool, practice creating different shapes and lines. Start by plotting anchor points and then adjust the curves by manipulating the handles. Remember, the fewer points you use, the smoother your curves will be.

Mastering the Pen Tool can significantly improve the quality of your vector illustrations.

3. Utilize Global Colors

Global Colors allow you to change a color universally across your entire document with a single edit. To create a Global Color, add a new swatch and check the "Global" box. When you need to change this color, double-click the swatch, adjust it, and all instances of that color will update automatically. This is particularly useful for brand consistency and large projects where color schemes need frequent adjustments.

4. Experiment with the Blend Tool

The Blend Tool can create smooth transitions between objects and colors. To use it, select the objects you want to blend, then go to Object > Blend > Make. You can adjust the number of steps in the blend by going to Object > Blend > Blend Options. This tool is excellent for creating gradients, shadows, and other effects that require smooth transitions.

5. Leverage Keyboard Shortcuts

Efficiency is key in design, and keyboard shortcuts can save you a significant amount of time. Some essential Illustrator shortcuts include:

- V for Selection Tool

- A for Direct Selection Tool

- P for Pen Tool

- T for Type Tool

- Ctrl/Cmd + Z to undo

Learning and using these shortcuts can streamline your workflow, making your design process faster and more efficient.

Improving your skills in Adobe Illustrator involves regular practice and taking on new projects that challenge you to use different tools and techniques. Online tutorials, courses, and community forums can provide valuable insights and tips. Additionally, studying the work of other designers and experimenting with their techniques can inspire you and broaden your skill set.

Five essential tools used in Adobe Illustrator include the Pen Tool for creating precise paths and shapes, the Shape Builder Tool for combining and editing shapes, the Type Tool for adding and editing text, the Gradient Tool for applying and adjusting gradients, and the Eyedropper Tool for sampling and applying colors.
